Wom-initial Pattani Malay consonants are short or long. The closures of the "long" consonants are longer than those of the "short" ones; this is a sufficient cue for perception, but in voiceless plosives the duration of the silent closure is audible only after a vowel, yet listeners label such isolated words well and so must use other cues.
