Abstract The amphipod fauna of the Norwegian abyssal plains has a low diversity. About 30 species have been found and general faunal composition indicates that they represent the majority of species occuring in the area. The number of species would then be 20 % or less than that found in corresponding areas in the North Atlantic. Some of the species occur in great abundance. Endemism at the species level is high.
