Outer hair cell (OHC) electromotility enables frequency selectivity and sensitivity in mammalian audition. Electromotility is generated by the transmembrane protein prestin and is sensitive to amphipathic compounds including salicylate, chlorpromazine (CPZ), and trinitrophenol (TNP).
