}Evx genes are widely used in animal development. In vertebrates they are crucial in gastrulation, neurogenesis, appendage development and tailbud formation, whilst in protostomes they are involved in gastrulation and neurogenesis, as well as segmentation at least in Drosophila. We have cloned the Evx genes of amphioxus (Branchiostoma floridae), and analysed their expression to understand how the functions of Evx have evolved between invertebrates and vertebrates, and in particular at the origin…

The single amphioxus Mox gene: insights into the functional evolution of Mox genes, somites, and the asymmetry of amphioxus somitogenesis.
- BiologyDevelopmental biology
- 2002
AmphiMox expression adds new data into a long-standing debate on the extent of the asymmetry of amphioxus somitogenesis and proposes a scenario for the functional evolution of Mox genes within chordates, in which Mox was co-opted for somite formation before the cephalochordate-vertebrate split.
The evolution of chordate neural segmentation.
- BiologyDevelopmental biology
- 2002
A model for the evolution of vertebrate rhombomeric segmentation is proposed, in which rhombomere evolution involved the transfer of mechanisms regulating neural segmentation from vertical induction by underlying segmented mesoderm to horizontal induction by graded retinoic acid signalling.
Gene duplications in the prototypical cephalochordate amphioxus q
- Biology
- 2002
This work reports the isolation of a second Emx gene (AmphiEmxB) arising from an independent duplication in the amphioxus genome, and argues that a tandem duplication probably occurred in the Posterior part of the Hox cluster in Amphioxus, giving rise to AmphiHox14, and discusses the structure of the chordate and vertebrate ancestral clusters.
The amphioxus Hairy family: differential fate after duplication
- BiologyDevelopment
- 2003
Amphi-Hairy genes expression suggest that amphioxus early somites are molecularly prefigured in an anteroposterior sequence in the dorsolateral wall of the archenteron, and the presence of a midbrain/hindbrain boundary.
Axial patterning in cephalochordates and the evolution of the organizer
- BiologyNature
- 2007
The gastrula of the cephalochordate amphioxus expresses dorsal/ventral (D/V) patterning genes in patterns reminiscent of those of their vertebrate orthlogues, and it is proposed that separate signalling centres for patterning the D/V and A/P axes may be an ancestral chordate character.
The amphioxus genome illuminates vertebrate origins and cephalochordate biology.
- BiologyGenome research
- 2008
The results indicate that the amphioxus genome is elemental to an understanding of the biology and evolution of nonchordate deuterostomes, invertebrate chordates, and vertebrates.
The basal chordate amphioxus as a simple model for elucidating developmental mechanisms in vertebrates.
- BiologyBirth defects research. Part C, Embryo today : reviews
- 2008
This review examines the basal chordate, amphioxus, as a simple model for providing insights into the development and evolution of the vertebrates, with which it shares many features, including a…
The amphioxus genome in Evo-Devo: archetype or "cul de sac'?
- Biology
- 2001
The results indicate that the Amphioxus genome has particularities and oddities that remind: amphioxus is not the ancestor of the vertebrates, but its fortunate position as the closest living relative to the ancestor give amphioxUS genes the privilege to serve as key landmark to understand morphological evolution.
An Amphioxus Gli Gene Reveals Conservation of Midline Patterning and the Evolution of Hedgehog Signalling Diversity in Chordates
- BiologyPloS one
- 2007
It is shown that vertebrates and amphioxus have evolved functionally-similar repertoires of Gli proteins using parallel molecular routes; vertebrates via gene duplication and divergence, and Amphioxus via alternate splicing of a single gene.

Conservation of Brachyury (T) genes in amphioxus and vertebrates: developmental and evolutionary implications.
- BiologyDevelopment
- 1995
It is proposed that roles of Brachyury in notochord differentiation are more ancient than roles in mesoderm formation, and that the latter are shared by cephalochordates and all vertebrates.
Sequence and embryonic expression of the amphioxus engrailed gene (AmphiEn): the metameric pattern of transcription resembles that of its segment-polarity homolog in Drosophila.
- BiologyDevelopment
- 1997
The segmental expression of AmphiEn in forming somites suggests that the functions of engrailed homologs in establishing and maintaining a metameric body plan may have arisen only once during animal evolution.
An amphioxus snail gene: Expression in paraxial mesoderm and neural plate suggests a conserved role in patterning the chordate embryo
- BiologyDevelopment Genes and Evolution
- 1998
The results indicate that an ancestral function of snail genes in the lineage leading to vertebrates is to define the paraxial mesoderm and indicate that a cell population homologous to the vertebrate neural crest may be present in amphioxus, thus providing an important link in the evolution of this key vertebrate tissue.
Colinear and segmental expression of amphioxus Hox genes.
- BiologyDevelopmental biology
- 1999
It is suggested that the ancestral role of chordate Hox genes was primarily in the neural tube and that chordateHox genes can functionally diverge in a manner analogous to that of Drosophila ftz or zen.

Characterisation of amphioxus HNF-3 genes: conserved expression in the notochord and floor plate.
- BiologyDevelopmental biology
- 1997
The characterisation of HNF-3 class genes from the cephalochordate amphioxus and molecular phylogenetic analysis reveals that these derive from an independent duplication in the cesarean lineage support two conclusions: Firstly, that the role of the dorsal lip/Hensen's node, notochord, and floor plate as organisers of the vertebrate body plan evolved prior to the separation of the carnivorous and vertebrate lineages, at least 520 million years ago.
