In the fresh-water planarians Dugesia benazzii and D. lugubris, diploid amphimictic and polyploid pseudogamic biotypes occur, each of them with a peculiar chromosome cycle. In crosses between diploid biotype (acting as female) and polyploid ones, various degrees may be observed from amphimictic diploid to polyploid pseudogamic offspring. All cytological mechanisms that characterise the cycles of natural biotypes and of hybrids are inherited independently and only rarely can they be found… Expand

Distribution and origin of chromosomal races in the freshwater planarian Dugesia polychroa (Turbellaria: Tricladida)
TLDR
The results indicate that occasional fertilisation of parthenogenetic eggs leading to genome addition is responsible for the maintainance of polyploid forms in natural populations of D. polychroa. Expand
Contrasting power of the factors for fission and sexuality in a polyploid planarian
One of the biotypes of the planarian Dugesia benazzii is triploid in the somatic line, hexaploid in the female line owing to a chromosome set doubling, and diploid in the male line due to a haploidExpand
The first record of polyploidy in a land planarian species (Geoplana burmeisteri)
Abstract Terrestrial planarian species generally show high karyotype stability. Nevertheless, in the present study chromosome variability was documented in a sample of 16 sexually mature animalsExpand
Polyploidy and Types of Development in the Triclad Dugesia Lugubris S.L.: Interaction Between the Ploidy Level and the Origin of Amphimixis or Pseudogamy
SUMMARYThe planarian Dugesia lugubris s. 1. has various karyological races with peculiar chromosome cycles; one of these is characterized by a triploid somatic set, while the female line is hexaploidExpand
Comparative karyotype analysis in diploid and triploid Dolichoplana carvalhoi (Tricladida, Terricola, Rhynchodemidae) from Brazil
In this work, we present cytogenetic data for the land planarian Dolichoplana carvalhoi. Two different karyotypes, one diploid (2n = 2x = 14 chromosomes) and one triploid (2n = 3x = 21 chromosomes),Expand
Sex in Parthenogenetic Planarians: Phylogenetic Relic or Evolutionary Resurrection?
TLDR
The evolutionary significance of sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction in the freshwater planarian Schmidtea polychroa is elucidated and the evolutionary consequences of such rare sexual processes for the success and maintenance of parthenogenesis are stressed. Expand
Production of diploid and triploid offspring by inbreeding of the triploid planarian Dugesia ryukyuensis
TLDR
In the triploids of D. ryukyuensis, chiasmata between homologous chromosomes were observed in both female and male germ lines, which suggests that both diploid and triploid offspring of this species are produced bisexually by zygotic fusion between sperm and eggs, which may be a novel mechanism in planarian for escaping theTriploid state. Expand
First evidence of self-fertilization in a marine microturbellarian (Platyhelminthes)
TLDR
It is suggested to be the key factor shaping the reproductive strategy of the species, and selfing may allow for colonization of new habitats that can start from single, unfertilized specimens. Expand
ON TRE APPEARANCE OF FEMALE ASYNAPSIS AND POLYPLOIDY IN A POPULATION OF TRE DIPLOID SYNAPTIC BIOTYPE OF DUGESIA BENAZZII: FIRST STEPS OF TRE EVOLUTION TOWARDS TRE POL YPLOID BIOTYPES
  • 2016
The planarian Dugesia benazzii presents a diploid biotype which is synaptic and amphimictic and two polyploid biotypes which are characterized either i) by asynapsis in the female line or ii) byExpand
The occurrence and significance of triploidy in the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica
Karyotyping of Fasciola hepatica samples from Britain and Ireland has identified a triploid isolate which is effectively aspermic, rendering it necessarily asexually reproducing. Considering theExpand
