The nature of ammonia and urea excretion was examined in the Pacific hagfish (Eptatretus stoutii), which, under resting conditions, excreted similar quantities of nitrogen as either ammonia or urea. In the presence of high external ammonia (HEA) concentrations, ammonia was taken up at high rates and then excreted at similarly high rates upon return to normal water.
