Physiologic jaundice is common during the newborn transitional period and is seen in approximately twothirds of all well term infants. The condition results from the abrupt cessation of bilirubin (BR) clearance by the placenta and a transient deficiency in hepatic BR uptake, intracellular transport, and glucuronyltransferase conjugation.
