Norepinephrine (NE), acting through the alpha 1-adrenergic receptor, modules the response of rat hepatocytes in primary culture to transforming growth factor type beta 1 (TGF beta) by increasing the amount of TGF beta required for a given degree of inhibition of epidermal growth factor (EGF)-induced DNA synthesis (Houck et al., J.
