Fish easily accumulate n−3 PUFA of exogenous origin, but the underlying mechanisms are not well established in the whole animal. This study was undertaken to investigate whether this feature was physiologically associated with mitochondrial and peroxisomal capacities that differentially affect FA oxidation. For this purpose, peroxisomal FA oxidation was increased by treating rainbow trout with fenofibrate, which strongly stimulates the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α in rodents…

The data suggest that fenofibrate and fasting regulate the lipid metabolism in grass carp through different metabolic pathways, and could be used for the study of lipid abnormalities as a herbivorous model.

This is the first study to show that body fat deposition and dietary lipid content affects PPARα activation and the hypolipidemic effects of fenofibrate in fish, and this could be due to differences in substrate availability for lipid catabolism in fish fed with different diets.

Dietary Fenofibrate Reduces Hepatic Lipid Deposition by Regulating Lipid Metabolism in Yellow Catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco Exposed to Waterborne Zn

The present working hypothesis is that dietary fenofibrate addition will reduce hepatic lipids in yellow catfish exposed to waterborne Zn, and results suggest that changes at the molecular and enzymatic levels may underlie the patterns of lipid metabolism and accordingly affect hepatic fat storage.

The results suggest that the altered hepatic metabolism of long-chain fatty acids between oxidation and esterification caused by fenofibrate may be a factor responsible for the decreased secretion of triglyceride, hence leading to hypotriglyceridaemia in vivo.

Fenofibric acid is the possible proximate peroxisome proliferator of fen ofibrate in rat hepatocytes, cultured hepatocytes reflect in vivo sensitivity to fenofibrate with respect to peroxISome proliferation, and there is some evidence that the catalytic activity of the CYP4A1 enzyme mediates, at least in part, perox isomal PCOA induction.
