Many animals produce alarm signals when they detect a potential predator, but we still know little about the information contained in these signals. Using presentations of 15 species of live predators, we show that acoustic features of the mobbing calls of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapilla) vary with the size of the predator. Companion playback experiments revealed that chickadees detect this information and that the intensity of mobbing behavior is related to the size and threat of…

Alarm calls of tufted titmice convey information about predator size and threat
TLDR
The broadband alarm calls of Titmice, containing D-notes uttered in an unpredictable manner that may make it difficult for predators to determine the number of titmice calling, may be particularly well suited for deterring predators.
Nuthatches eavesdrop on variations in heterospecific chickadee mobbing alarm calls
TLDR
It is shown experimentally that red-breasted nuthatches respond appropriately to subtle variations of these heterospecific “chick-a-dee” alarm calls, thereby evidencing that they have gained important information about potential predators in their environment.
Lack of alarm calls in a gregarious bird: models and videos of predators prompt alarm responses but no alarm calls by zebra finches
TLDR
The results are consistent with the hypothesis that zebra finches lack a flee alarm call and appear not to signal about immediate danger through a change in calling rate.
Alarm calls of a cooperative bird are referential and elicit context-specific antipredator behavior
TLDR
Novel evidence is presented that a social bird species possesses 2 distinct alarm calls for aerial versus terrestrial predators that can inform others of both the type of predator and its likely location.
Eastern chipmunks increase their perception of predation risk in response to titmouse alarm calls
TLDR
The first study to quantify an effect of avian alarm calling on the perceived cost of predation in a mammalian receiver/eavesdropper using the eastern tufted titmouse--eastern chipmunk dyad is described.
Corvid predators may be attracted to parental alarm calls that trigger fledging of nestlings in Oriental Tits (Parus minor)
ABSTRACT Predators eavesdropping on prey communication is relatively little studied. Oriental Tits (Parus minor) use “jar” alarm calls toward snake predators near their nests. In response to this
Nestlings reduce their predation risk by attending to predator-information encoded within conspecific alarm calls
TLDR
It is shown that noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala) nestlings can differentiate between terrestrial and aerial alarm calls of their own species, and that nestlings are able to take advantage of the complex vocal repertoire that adults produce, although discernment is an issue when filtering out irrelevant stimuli.
Great tits encode contextual information in their food and mobbing calls
TLDR
Great tits produce calls with longer D notes and shorter intervals between D notes than in the mobbing context, which indicates that great tits use two mechanisms of graded signals to inform conspecifics about the nature of a situation.

MOBBING CALLS OF BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES: EFFECTS OF URGENCY ON CALL PRODUCTION
TLDR
The results suggest that information about the immediacy of threat or proximity of a predator may be signaled by alteration of the rate of calling, with possible additional information contained in proportional changes in the different syllable types of the call.
Interspecific attraction to the mobbing calls of black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus)
TLDR
That significantly more birds approached the speaker and displayed mobbing behavior during the mobbing call playback suggests that black-capped chickadee mobbing vocalizations carry meaning for at least ten other avian species.
Red squirrels, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus , produce predator-class specific alarm calls
TLDR
This is the first demonstration of predator-class specific alarm calls of red squirrels, which are acoustically convergent on the 'seet' alarm call produced by many species of passerine birds in response to raptors.
Flock-specific recognition of chickadee calls

    Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology

TLDR
Playback tests were conducted to determine whether black-capped chickadee flocks recognize the difference between their own calls and those of another flock, suggesting its importance in coordinating flock behavior.
VOCAL REPERTOIRE OF THE BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE
TLDR
Vocal signals tend toward sexual segregation, which may be important in a monomorphic species, and selection pressures acting on the structure of vocalizations are discussed.
ALARM CALLING IN THREE SPECIES OF MARMOTS
Many species produce alarm calls that vary according to situation. Theoretically, alarm call structure could covary with predator type and could communicate potentially ''referential information, or
The evolution of functionally referential alarm communication: Multiple adaptations; multiple constraints
TLDR
This essay aims to make two simple points about the evolution of functionally referential alarm communication, and suggests that species must have the perceptual and motor abilities to respond differently to acoustically-distinct alarm vocalizations.
DOES BRANTS' WHISTLING RAT (PAROTOMYS BRANTSII) USE AN URGENCY-BASED ALARM SYSTEM IN REACTION TO AERIAL AND TERRESTRIAL PREDATORS?
TLDR
This study supports the prediction that mammalian alarm call systems in two-dimensional environments primarily provide information indicating the level of risk and not predator type.
