The occurrence of alkylphenol and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) was determined over a 74-mile length of the Cuyahoga River, Ohio. Measurable levels of both the octyl and nonyl forms of these abundantly used nonionic surfactants were observed with the nonylphenol (NP) plus nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) typically accounting for greater than 90% of the total APEs in each sample. For all media (water, fish, and sediment) the total NPE (NP + NPE) concentrations were higher in the more urbanized…

Correlations of nonylphenol-ethoxylates and nonylphenol with biomarkers of reproductive function in carp (Cyprinus carpio) from the Cuyahoga River.

Fate and distribution of the octyl- and nonylphenol ethoxylates and some carboxylated transformation products in the Back River, Maryland.

Ratios of the different compounds' concentrations provide evidence for the season dependency of two different degradation pathways, as well as suggesting that in the fall sampling events, when rain occurred, APEOs present in particulate matter might have originated in the river's tributaries rather than the treatment plant.

Alkylphenol ethoxylates and brominated flame retardants in water, fish (carp) and sediment samples from the Vaal River, South Africa

The concentrations of APEs and BFRs in water samples were found to be in the range with the results reported in the literature while the concentration in fish and sediment were lower than the concentrations reported in other studies.

Seasonal changes in nonylphenol ethoxylates and their metabolites in water and sediment of urban river polluted by nonylphenol.

The surveyed results suggested that some point emission sources of nonylphenolic compounds were located in the river basin between the first sampling site and the second sampling site, and the total concentrations of NP, NPnEOs and NPmECs in both river water and sediment were higher in winter and spring than in summer and autumn.

Mass balance study of nonylphenol ethoxylates and their metabolites in an urban river contaminated by nonylphenol.

In previous studies, an urban river called Kamo River was found to be polluted with nonylphenol (NP) by a rubber product manufacturing factory, and the contribution of the factory effluent to the river pollution was determined to be the river sediment.

Survey on karun river water contamination by alkylphenolic compounds as endocrine disrupting contaminants

Background: Alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APnEOs) and their metabolites disposal from sewage treatment plants (STP) are of particular concern due to their persistence, toxicity to aquatic organisms,

Occurrence and Distribution Pattern of Alkylphenol Ethoxylates and Brominated Flame Retardants in Sediment Samples from Vaal River, South Africa

The distribution observed in this study indicated higher levels of sediment contamination by APEs relative to BFRs, which underline the need to further investigate the burden and risks associated with chemical contamination in developing countries.
