Epidemiologic studies have found that rates of alcohol use and alcoholism in persons of Asian descent are lower than rates in other ethnic groups. One possible reason is that about half of certain Asians, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean persons, have a deficiency of the low-Km mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) isoenzyme, which is responsible for metabolizing acetaldehyde.
