Of 161 alcohol-abusing patients who were hospitalized for suicide attempts (attempters) between 1970 and 1975 and followed until 1982, 18 eventually committed suicide. The 143 nonsuiciders were compared to the 18 with respect to 27 background characteristics including their psychiatric diagnosis, Beck Depression Inventory, Hopelessness Scale, and Suicidal Intent Scale (SIS) scores. Only the SIS precautions subscale differentiated those who did and did not eventually commit suicide: the patients…
An examination of suicide probability in alcoholic in-patients.
TLDR
It was found that self-esteem, depression and trait anxiety predict suicide probability in alcohol dependence and suicide probability was higher within the sub-sample with a history of a suicidal act in comparison to those without such a history.
Hopelessness, impulsiveness and intent among suicide attempters with major depression, alcohol dependence, or both
TLDR
Differences in hopelessness, impulsiveness and suicide intent between suicide attempters with either major depression or alcohol dependence, comorbid major depression and alcohol dependence and those without these disorders are examined.
Alcohol abuse and suicidal behaviour in young and middle aged men: differentiating between attempted and completed suicide.
TLDR
The significantly stronger association between alcohol abuse and attempted suicide compared to completed suicide may be viewed in the light of possible impact of intoxication and impulsiveness on non-fatal suicidal behaviour in alcohol abusers.
Suicide attempts and alcohol consumption in an emergency room sample.
TLDR
Alcohol consumption prior to the suicide attempt is a more important risk factor than the habitual alcohol consumption pattern.
Risk factors for suicidal behavior among alcoholics : Factors associated with a history of ideation vs. A history of parasuicide
Four risk factors for parasuicide and suicide ideation in 197 male and female alcoholism inpatients were investigated: addiction severity, family addiction history, psychiatric symptomatology, and
High Suicidal Intent Scores Indicate Future Suicide
TLDR
It is found that age above 55 years, mood disorder diagnoses and SIS scores of 19 or above significantly predicted suicide, and the SIS could be a valuable tool in predicting suicide, especially in elderly suicide attempters.
Psychological vulnerability to completed suicide: a review of empirical studies.
TLDR
Current knowledge of psychological vulnerability to completed suicide could inform social and neurobiological research, and thereby deepen understanding of suicide while potentially bridging these areas of study.
Assessing risk for completed suicide in patients with alcohol dependence: Clinicians' views of critical factors
TLDR
Identifying what clinicians who specialize in substance abuse view as critical in the assessment and treatment of suicidal patients is a first step in gaining a greater understanding of suicide risk within an alcoholic population.
Predisposing and precipitating factors for suicide among alcoholics: empirical review and conceptual integration.
TLDR
It is proposed that aggression/impulsivity, severe alcoholism, negative affect, and hopelessness are key predisposing factors for suicide among alcoholics and major depressive episodes and stressful life events, particularly interpersonal difficulties, are key precipitating factors.

Hopelessness and eventual suicide: a 10-year prospective study of patients hospitalized with suicidal ideation.
TLDR
The authors intensively studied 207 patients hospitalized because of suicidal ideation, but not for recent suicide attempts, at the time of admission, finding the importance of degree of hopelessness as an indicator of long-term suicidal risk in hospitalized depressed patients.

TLDR
Alcoholics who later committed suicide had a higher rate of depressive and dysphoric symptoms and were more brittle and sensitive than the others, while the frequencies of cognitive impairment and delirium tremens were similar.

Eventual suicide in interrupted and uninterrupted attempters: a challenge to the cry-for-help hypothesis.
TLDR
A total of 499 patients hospitalized for suicide attempts (attempters) between 1970 and 1975 were followed until 1982; of this group, 28 (5.6%) eventually committed suicide, whereas only 22 (4.8%) of the 458 patients who had not been interruptedEventually committed suicide.

TLDR
A structured questionnaire administered to 913 primary alcoholics entering an alcoholism treatment program revealed that 155 had attempted suicide, and those with histories of suicide attempts were more likely to have had early life difficulties with police, school and parents.

TLDR
Character disordered subjects were more likely to report both more serious intent at time of suicide attempt and at interview than other attempters, and the suicide ideators scale yielded a general factor, called specificity of planning, accounting for more than half the variation.

TLDR
Identification of particular persons who will commit suicide is not currently feasible, because of the low sensitivity and specificity of available identification procedures and the low base rate of this behavior.
