Little is known about how the constitutional councils were created in Colonial Ciudad Real de Chiapas, and how and when the Cadiz Constitution of 1812 started to be applied in this territory. This study looks into the role played by both the colonial assistant officials as local representatives of the Spanish monarchy’s authority, and the different village stakeholders when the councils were appointed.
