Aberrant levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) rapidly generated from NADPH oxidase (NOX) activation can be cytotoxic due to activating pro-apoptotic signals. However, ROS also induce pro-survival autophagy through the engulfment of damaged mitochondria.
