Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor define a family of dimeric proteins characterized by eight conserved cysteine residues involved in disulfide bonds. Thirteen non-cysteine residues conserved among the platelet-derived/vascular endothelial growth factors were individually mutated to alanine in v-sis/PDGF-B.
