A solid plate about to slam onto a water surface makes it presence felt before the actual contact by squeezing out a mediating air cushioning layer. This air cushioning layer has regions of low and high pressures. At the point of high (stagnation) air pressure, the water surface is deflected away from the impactor. While in the low pressure region, a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability initiates the suction of the water surface towards the impactor. Using a new measuring technique we measure such… Expand

Air Entrapment and its effect on Pressure Impulses in the slamming of a Flat Disc on Water
The presence of ambient air in liquid-slamming events plays a crucial role in influencing the shape of the liquid surface prior to the impact, and the distribution of loads created upon impact. WeExpand
On Wedge-Slamming Pressures
The water entry of a wedge has become a model test in marine and naval engineering research. Wagner theory, originating in 1932, predicts impact pressures, and accounts for contributions to the totalExpand
Stability analysis of a diverging Kelvin-Helmholtz slamming flow
When a liquid slams into a solid, the intermediate gas is squeezed out at a speed that diverges when approaching the moment of impact. Although there is mounting experimental evidence thatExpand
Total-Internal-Reflection Deflectometry for Measuring Small Deflections of a Fluid Surface
We describe a method that uses total internal reflection (TIR) at the water-air interface inside a large, transparent tank filled with water to measure the interface’s deflections. Using thisExpand

Air trapping at impact of a rigid sphere onto a liquid
Abstract An experimental and theoretical investigation of the air trapping by a blunt, locally spherical body impacting onto the free surface of water is conducted. In the parameter regime previouslyExpand
Air cushioning with a lubrication/inviscid balance
The air cushioning effect in the gap between an almost inviscid body of water and a nearby solid wall (or another body of water) is studied theoretically and is found to depend on predominantlyExpand
Air entrainment during impact of droplets on liquid surfaces
Abstract We study drop impact on a deep pool of the same fluid, with an emphasis on the air layer trapped under the droplets from its formation to its rupture. The penetration velocity of the airExpand
Study of initial stage of entry of a solid sphere into shallow liquid with Synthetic Schlieren technique
Abstract Vertical entry of a 213 mm diameter solid sphere moving with a low speed of 16 – 40 mm/s onto a shallow liquid layer is investigated experimentally. The focus of the study is on deformationExpand
Events before droplet splashing on a solid surface
A high-velocity (≈1 ms−1) impact between a liquid droplet (≈1 mm) and a solid surface produces a splash. Classical observations traced the origin of this splash to a thin sheet of fluid ejected nearExpand
Flat plate impact on water
While the classical problem of a flat plate impact on a water surface at zero dead-rise angle has been studied for a long time both theoretically and experimentally, it still presents a number ofExpand
Skating on a film of air: drops impacting on a surface.
TLDR
The results show that the dynamics of impacting drops are much more complex than previously thought, with a rich array of unexpected phenomena that require rethinking classic paradigms. Expand
Precursors to splashing of liquid droplets on a solid surface.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that, neglecting intermolecular forces between the liquid and the solid, the liquid does not contact theSolid, and instead spreads on a very thin air film, which develops a high curvature and emits capillary waves. Expand
The effect of entrained air in violent water wave impacts
The effects of entrained air in cushioning water impact on a wall are estimated by using a flow which has many similarities to the severe flip-through impacts that have been identified for waterExpand
Universal mechanism for air entrainment during liquid impact
When a millimetre-sized liquid drop approaches a deep liquid pool, both the interface of the drop and the pool deform before the drop touches the pool. The build-up of air pressure prior toExpand
