Paspalum atratum and P. lenticulare are perennial grasses, native to South America. [...] Key Method Forage yield was evaluated during 3 growing seasons between 2011 and 2014. Digestibility and CP concentration were assessed in summer 2014, cattle preference in winter 2013 and summer 2015, frost tolerance after the first frosts in June 2012, flowering time during 2013 and 2014 and seed yield and germination in 2014. A marked warm-season growing period was observed for both species with annual forage yields…Expand

Seed and forage performance for an elite group of Paspalum notatum intraspecific hybrids
There were differences among genotypes, years and seasons for most of the variables assessed, and different performances for the traits allowing different patterns of seasonal forage yield, flowering period, seed yield and quality. Expand
Reproductive Systems in Paspalum: Relevance for Germplasm Collection and Conservation, Breeding Techniques, and Adoption of Released Cultivars
Germplasm collection and conservation can now be rethought considering the newly available information related to how diversity is allocated in nature and how it can be transferred between the sexual and apomictic germplasm using novel breeding approaches. Expand
Crude protein contents in hybrids of Paspalum evaluated in the Pampa Biome of Southern Brazil
The goal of this study was to evaluate the crude protein (CP) content of hybrids of P. plicatulum x P. guenoarum, in a region of Southern Brazil in the Pampa biome, and results are encouraging for forage breeding studies with species of the genus Paspalum. Expand

Reproductive Characterization of Bahiagrass Germplasm
The objective was to determine and compare the mode of reproduction of diploid and tetraploid germplasm of bahiagrass, and define their usefulness for genetic improvement research. Expand
Hybridization and heterosis in the Plicatula group of Paspalum
The results indicated that gene transfer via hybridization is possible among several species of Plicatula and Superior hybrids for specific traits can be generated and fixed by apomixis. Expand
Valor nutritivo da forragem e produção animal em pastagens de Brachiaria brizantha
The objectives of this work were to evaluate animal production and its relationship with pasture characteristics of Brachiaria brizantha cultivars Marandu, Xaraes and Piata. The experiment had aExpand
Nutritive Evaluation of Forage Plants Grown in South Sulawesi, Indonesia II. Mineral Composition
It is indicated that Ca content of forage plants grown at the lowland in rainy season was higher than at the highland in dry season and Mg content offorage plants growing in the highlands was lower than in the lowlands. Expand
Produção de forragem e características da estrutura do dossel de cultivares de Brachiaria brizantha sob pastejo
The main differences in the sward structures between cultivars were stem accumulation and, consequently, the reduction in the leaf blade: stem ratio, in 'Piata" during the rainy season and in 'Xaraes' during the dry season, which suggests different grazing management for these cultivars. Expand
Bahiagrass Tetraploid Germplasm: Reproductive and Agronomic Characterization of Segregating Progeny
Heritability estimates obtained for these characteristics indicate that selection can be successfully used for the genetic improve-ment of this species. Expand
Tetraploid bahiagrass hybrids: breeding technique, genetic variability and proportion of heterotic hybrids
The objectives were to create a second generation of hybrids by crossing sexual first-generation tetraploid hybrids and unrelated apomictic FGTH or ecotypes, determine the segregation for mode of reproduction, and estimate the resulting genetic variation and heterosis for several agronomic characteristics. Expand
The breeding system of three Paspalum species with forage potential
Knowledge of the breeding system is a fundamental step in any program dealing with genetic improvement of wild grasses for forage purposes. This information is essential for Paspalum , a large genusExpand
Harnessing apomictic reproduction in grasses: what we have learned from Paspalum.
BACKGROUND Apomixis is an alternative route of plant reproduction that produces individuals genetically identical to the mother plant through seeds. Apomixis is desirable in agriculture, because itExpand
Bahiagrass Cultivar Response to Grazing Frequency with Limited Nitrogen Fertilization
Testing the effects of two grazing frequencies on production, nutritive value, and persistence of 'Argentine', 'Pensacola', 'Tifton 9', and 'UF Riata' bahiagrass cultivars shows that Argentine is a productive and persistent bahiAGrass for beef cattle producers using limited N fertilization and frequent grazing in Florida.
