We measured serum concentrations of insulin like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in 20 thalassemic males with short stature (height SDS <-2) and/or slow growth velocity (GV <-1 SD) throughout their childhood and adolescence, compared these data with normal reference data validated in our lab, and evaluated their growth hormone secretion in response to clonidine and glucagon stimulation.
