A Gram-stain-negative, motile, mesophilic, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, strain 8-8(T), was isolated from surface seawater at Muroto, Kochi, Japan. The strain exhibited agar-degrading activity. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain fell within the family Alteromonadaceae and clustered distantly with members of the genus Glaciecola (≤ 94.0% similarity).
