Ampelodesmos Link is a monotypic cane-like grass f rom the Mediterranean area. Since it grows 2-3 m tall and has a large, many-flowered panicle, densely pilose rhachilla joints, and a basic chromosome number of X 12 (Darl ington and Wylie 1955), it has t radi t ional ly been classified (Bentham and Hooker 1883; Bews 1929; Hitchcock 1935; Pilger 1954) with Arundo, Phragmites, Gynerium, and Cortaderia, referred to here as the arundoid grasses.
