To evaluate the risk of offspring of heavy drinking during pregnancy, we administered a questionnaire to 633 women at the first prenatal visit. Nutritional status, smoking, drug and alcohol use were determined. Women were classified into three groups: abstinent and rare drinkers; moderate drinkers; and heavy drinkers. After delivery, detailed pediatric, neurologic and developmental examinations were administered by a physician without prior knowledge of any history. Infants born to heavy…
Moderate maternal drinking and outcome of pregnancy
TLDR
Both univariate and multivariate analyses were suggestive of a decrease in mean birth weight associated with maternal drinking during pregnancy, especially in women who also smoked during pregnancy; this effect was higher in male newborns.
Alcohol abuse during pregnancy: an epidemiologic study.
TLDR
It is suggested that alcohol abuse during pregnancy constitutes a significant risk for a range of adverse perinatal outcomes in as many as 50% of the offspring, and hence, should be considered a major public health concern.
Maternal alcohol consumption and birth weight. How much drinking during pregnancy is safe?
TLDR
Consuming at least one to two drinks daily was associated with a substantially increased risk of producing a growth-retarded infant, and consuming less than one drink daily had a minimal effect on intrauterine growth and birth weight.
Moderate alcohol consumption during pregnancy and child development

TLDR
In general, moderate alcohol consumption during pregnancy does not seem to have any markedly adverse influence on the later development of children, however, an upper limit for apparently safe alcohol consumption cannot be given.
Alcohol consumption and outcome of pregnancy.
TLDR
Pregnant women who reported drinking every day before pregnancy was diagnosed had heavier babies than those who did not drink at all, but there were no differences in mean birth weight according to alcohol use at the first antenatal visit.
Maternal alcohol consumption, birth weight, and minor physical anomalies.
IQ at Age 4 in Relation to Maternal Alcohol Use and Smoking During Pregnancy
Examined the relationship of prenatal alcohol exposure to the IQ of children at age 4 in a longitudinal prospective, population-based study. Multiple-regression analyses on data from 421 children

INCIDENCE OF THE FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME IN OFFSPRING OF CHRONICALLY ALCOHOLIC WOMEN
TLDR
This frequency of adverse outcome in the offspring of alcoholic women is sufficiently high to merit serious consideration of early pregnancy termination for the chronically alcoholic woman.

Adverse effects of maternal alcohol consumption on pregnancy and foetal growth in rats
TLDR
It is found that ethanol seemed to produce distinct teratological effects in Wistar rats and chick embryos when it was administered intravenously to the pregnant mother or the hen at critical periods in gestation.
Congenital malformations in offspring of a chronic alcoholic mother.
TLDR
It is concluded, with alternative theories, that the cases demonstrate an association between the maternal alcohol intake and the abnormalities found in the offspring.
The fetal alcohol syndrome in mice: an animal model.
TLDR
CBA and C3H female mice maintained on liquid diets--Metrecal plus ethanol--containing 15-35% ethanol-derived calories indicated that chronic maternal alcoholism is embryolethal and teratogenic in mice.
A PILOT PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF THE FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME AT THE BOSTON CITY HOSPITAL. PART II: THE INFANTS *
TLDR
Once women in the study group described by Dr. Rosett in the previous paper had been interviewed, a card that listed only each woman’s name and expected date of confinement was given to me, and of interest is the fact that in no instance was historical information about drinking sought by the house staff.
BIOCHEMICAL AND BEHAVIORAL CHANGES IN RATS EXPOSED TO ETHANOL IN UTERO
TLDR
Changes in tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), believed to be the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis, were found in this laboratory in the brains of pups exposed to ethanol in uiero.
