  • I\though the clinical use of relax:uion strategies have shown positive effects in arousal reduction, there is a small but growing litcrature pointing out some of the potential adversc effects of these strategies. For example, Lazarus and Mayne (1) (p. 261) cited such negative effects for progressive, deep muscle relaxation as "relaxation induced anxiety and panic, paradoxical increases in tension, and parasym­ pathetic rebound."
