Black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) are known to display five distinct spectral states. In order of increasing luminosity these are the quiescent state, low state, intermediate state, high state, and very high state. We present a self-consistent model of accretion flows around black holes that unifies all of these states except the very high state. The model is an extension of the following paradigm, which has been applied successfully to the quiescent state. The accretion flow consists of two…
A scheme to unify low-power accreting black holes Jet-dominated accretion flows and the radio/X-ray correlation
We explore the evolution in power of black holes of all masses, and their associated jets, within the scheme of an accretion rate-dependent state transition. Below a critical value of the accretion
STATE TRANSITIONS IN LOW-MASS X-RAY BINARIES
We investigate the model of disk/coronal accretion into a black hole. We show that the inner regions of an accretion disk in X-ray binaries can transform from a cool standard disk to an
Hot accretion flow with radiative cooling: state transitions in black hole X-ray binaries
We investigate state transitions in black hole X-ray binaries through different parameters by using two-dimensional axisymmetric hydrodynamical simulation method. For radiative cooling in hot
Advection-Dominated Accretion and the Black Hole Event Horizon
Low-Luminosity Accretion in Black Hole X-Ray Binaries and Active Galactic Nuclei
At luminosities below a few percent of Eddington, accreting black holes switch to a hard spectral state which is very different from the soft blackbody-like spectral state that is found at higher
Low-luminosity accretion in black hole X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei
At luminosities below a few percent of Eddington, accreting black holes switch to a hard spectral state which is very different from the soft blackbody-like spectral state that is found at higher
Radiation GRMHD Simulations of the Hard State of Black Hole X-Ray Binaries and the Collapse of a Hot Accretion Flow
We present global radiation GRMHD simulations of strongly magnetized accretion onto a spinning, stellar mass black hole at sub-Eddington rates. Using a frequency-dependent Monte Carlo procedure for
A unified accretion-ejection paradigm for black hole X-ray binaries - I. The dynamical constituents
We present a new picture for the central regions of Black Hole X-ray Binaries. In our view, these central regions have a multi-flow configuration which consists in (1) an outer standard accretion
On the Properties of Inner Cool Disks in the Hard State of Black Hole X-Ray Transient Systems
We investigate the formation of cool disks in the innermost regions of black hole X-ray transient systems in the low/hard state. Taking into account the combined cooling associated with the Compton
An accretion disk-outflow model for hysteretic state transition in X-ray binaries
We suggest a model of the advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) with magnetically driven outflows to explain hysteretic state transition observed in X-ray binaries (XRBs). The transition from a

The Spectral States of Black Hole X-Ray Binary Sources
A framework for the interpretation of the spectral states of black hole X-ray transients based on the diversity of accretion disk models is introduced. Depending on the mass accretion rate, it is
A New Model for Black Hole Soft X-Ray Transients in Quiescence
We present models of the soft X-ray transients, A0620-00, V404 Cyg, and X-ray Nova Mus 1991, in quiescence. In each source, we postulate that there is an outer region, extending outward from about
Disk-instability model for soft-X-ray transients containing black holes
Consideration is given to the time-dependent behavior of the accretion disks in low-mass X-ray binaries as a model for soft X-ray transients. The thermal stability and vertical structure properties
Advection-Dominated Models of Luminous Accreting Black Holes
It has been found that a class of optically-thin two-temperature advection-dominated accretion solutions explains many observations of low-luminosity accreting black holes. Here it is shown that
Quiescent accretion disks in black hole X-ray novae
We present detailed time-resolved spectroscopy of the Balmer emission lines from two black hole binary systems in quiescence, A0620-00 and Nova Muscae 1991. We find extraordinary similarities between
Bimodal behavior of accretion disks: Theory and application to Cygnus X-1 transitions
We develop a theory of Newtonian accretion disks based on an explicit formulation of viscous stresses arising from turbulent magnetic fields which are generated by Keplerian differential rotation of
Advection-dominated Accretion Model of the Black Hole V404 Cygni in Quiescence
We have analyzed archival ASCA data on the soft X-ray transient source V404 Cyg in quiescence. We find that in the energy range 0.7-8.5 keV the spectrum is a hard power law with a photon spectral
Accretion discs around black holes: two-dimensional, advection-cooled flows
Two-dimensional accretion flows near black holes have been investigated by time-dependent hydrodynamical calculations. We assume that the flow is axisymmetric and that radiative losses of internal
A two-temperature accretion disk model for Cygnus X-1: structure and spectrum.
We present a model for Cygnus X-1, involving an accretion disk around a black hole, which can explain the observed X-ray spectrum from 8 to 500 keV. In particular we construct a detailed model of the
Advection-dominated Accretion and Black Hole Event Horizons
The defining characteristic of a black hole is that it possesses an event horizon through which matter and energy can fall in but from which nothing escapes. Soft X-ray transients (SXTs), a class of
