Abstract Using census and multiplier methods to estimate the size of the population of female sex workers (FSWs) in a small city in western China, this study compared the advantages and challenges of the two methods. It was estimated that there were about 1,500 FSWs within the urban area using the census method, which was significantly lower than that estimated by the multiplier method (2,500). Each method has advantages and limitations, and could be applied to different situations. The census…
Estimating the Number of Sex Workers in South Africa: Rapid Population Size Estimation
TLDR
A rapid sex worker enumeration exercise was undertaken in twelve locations across the country based on principles of participatory mapping and Wisdom of the Crowd, reaching a working estimate of between 131,000 and 182,000 sex worker in South Africa.
The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Project mapping approach: an innovative approach for mapping and size estimation for groups at a higher risk of HIV in Pakistan
TLDR
This relatively simple methodology provides a scientific and systematic approach, which can be used in the region to estimate population sizes, understand geographical distribution of these groups and recognize the various operational typologies and dynamics of these populations for developing effective prevention strategies.
Estimating the Number of HIV+ Latino MSM Using RDS, SS-PSE, and the Census
TLDR
A novel model is developed in which data collected in the LMSM-CI survey serves as a bridge for use of data from other sources, which allows unambiguous, useful data, to be used to estimate population sizes.
Social Network Size Estimation and Determinants in Tehran Province Residents
TLDR
The estimation for social network size of Tehran inhabitants was smaller than that previously estimated size for the whole country (c=380) and the social network of subpopulations was different, which means that local estimations for sub-populations to improve the accuracy of population size estimation using network scale up method.
Size Estimation of Groups at High Risk of HIV/AIDS using Network Scale Up in Kerman, Iran
TLDR
It was showed that drug use is more common among young and mid-age males; although their sexual contacts were also considerable; these percentages show that special preventive program is needed to control an HIV transmission.
Appropriateness and execution challenges of three formal size estimation methods for high-risk populations in India
TLDR
Describing formal, external to programme methods for size estimation of high-risk populations and comparing execution challenges and validity of results shows that when appropriately executed, formal methods produced smaller estimates to programme data, although the RTM tended to be closer to programme estimates.
Assessing Bias in Population Size Estimates Among Hidden Populations When Using the Service Multiplier Method Combined With Respondent-Driven Sampling Surveys: Survey Study
TLDR
Assessment of biases that arise when estimating the population sizes of hidden populations using the SMM combined with respondent-driven sampling (RDS) surveys in Zimbabwe found evidence that the PSEs in most sites may be biased and a suggestion that the bias is toward underestimation, and this should be considered if the P SEs are to be used.
Programmatic mapping to determine the size and dynamics of sex work and injecting drug use in Mauritius
TLDR
This research provided Mauritius with validated KPs size estimations and provided the first national data on KP hotspots and operational dynamics, which will strengthen HIV prevention, intervention, and programme planning in the country through focusing efforts to systematically target high-risk areas.
Seroprevalence of blood-borne infections and population sizes estimates in a population of injecting drug users in Croatia.
TLDR
A high frequency of positive markers on hepatitis B virus and C virus in the population of injecting drug users in Croatia has been confirmed, as well as a low prevalence of HIV infection.

Estimating the size of hard-to-reach populations: a novel method using HIV testing data compared to other methods
TLDR
A novel method developed for use in Toronto and Vancouver that combines HIV serodiagnostic information with data on HIV testing behavior provides estimates of population size of hard-to-reach groups such as injecting drug users and men who have sex with men that are comparable with results derived by other methods.
The workbook approach to making estimates and projecting future scenarios of HIV/AIDS in countries with low level and concentrated epidemics
TLDR
An approach to making estimates and short term projections of future scenarios of HIV/AIDS in countries with low level and concentrated epidemics focuses on identifying populations which through their behaviour are at higher risk of infection with HIV or who are exposed through the risk behaviour of their sexual partners.

Estimating the size of populations at risk for HIV: issues and methods. A joint UNAIDS / IMPACT / FHI workshop: report and conclusions. Updated.
TLDR
This updated version of the document includes material that has surfaced since the original workshop was held and covers the major methods available for population size estimation with their strengths and weaknesses and explores how best to choose the right method for a given country situation and sub-population.
HIV Infection and Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Female Commercial Sex Workers in China
A cross-sectional survey was conducted among female commercial sex workers (FSWs) in Zhengzhou, China, to estimate rates of HIV infection and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and to document
HIV surveillance among female sex workers.
TLDR
Detailed surveillance of HIV infection among sex workers is critical for countries with low-level or concentrated HIV epidemics, and can help in monitoring the response to the HIV epidemic in countries with a generalized epidemic.
Overland heroin trafficking routes and HIV-1 spread in south and south-east Asia
TLDR
Overland heroin export routes have been associated with dual epidemics of injecting drug use and HIV infection in three Asian countries and along four routes, indicating that single country narcotics and HIV programs are unlikely to succeed unless the regional narcotic-based economy is addressed.

TLDR
Epidemic of HIV infection began in late 1980s in Yunnan, then spread from border areas to inland through IDUs, maintaining a higher prevalence in them to date, and showed an increasing trend in them, with a low prevalence in general population but appeared a wide spread in local areas.
