By means of temperature-dependent surface-extended x-ray-absorption fine structure (SEXAFS) measurements we characterize two different chemisorption state of atomic O/Cu(100), one corresponding to a reconstructed surface and the other to an unreconstructed surface, respectively. The unreconstructed state is characterized by an O-Cu nearest-neighbor (NN) bond length of 1.88(3) A, the O atoms being located 0.8(3) A above the first Cu layer
