Activation of the sympathetic nervous system inhibits insulin-stimulated glucose uptake. However, the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. Therefore, we studied the effects of catecholamines on insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and insulin-stimulated translocation of GLUT4 to the plasma membrane in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. We found that epinephrine (1 microM) nearly halved insulin-stimulated 2-deoxyglucose uptake. The beta-adrenoceptor antagonist propranolol (0.3 microM) completely…
Vanadium-dependent activation of glucose transport in adipocytes by catecholamines is not mediated via adrenoceptor stimulation or monoamine oxidase activity
TLDR
It is proposed that catecholamine derivatives combined with vanadium can generate novel complexes that may have low toxicity and promising anti-diabetic properties and limit insulin resistance by activating glucose consumption at least in fat stores.
Sustained βAR Stimulation Mediates Cardiac Insulin Resistance in a PKA-Dependent Manner.
TLDR
A critical role for protein kinase A is confirmed in βAR-mediated insulin resistance by demonstrating that sustained βAR stimulation resulted in the inhibition of insulin-induced glucose uptake, and a reduction of insulin induced glucose transporter (GLUT)4 expression that were mediated by the β2AR subtype in cardiomyocytes and heart tissue.
Beta3-adrenergic receptors stimulate glucose uptake in brown adipocytes by two mechanisms independently of glucose transporter 4 translocation.
TLDR
The results imply that adrenergic stimulation through beta3-adrenergic receptors induces glucose uptake in brown adipocytes via two mechanisms: a mechanism not dependent onGLUT1 and GLUT4 translocation, and a mechanism that is dependent on de novo synthesis of GLUT1 protein and increase of GLut1 protein at the PM.
Beta2-adrenoceptor stimulation has no effect on skeletal muscle glucose uptake
TLDR
β2-adrenergic stimulation had no effect on insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in human forearm skeletal muscle and was not found to improve insulin sensitivity in animals.
Adipose cells induce phospho-Thr-172 AMPK production by epinephrine or CL316243 in mouse 3T3-L1 adipocytes or MAPK activation and G protein-associated PI3K responses induced by CL316243 or aluminum fluoride in rat white adipocytes.
TLDR
The results provide possible clues for clarifying the signalling machinery involved in adrenoceptor responses, including those of β3-AR, in mouse-derived adipocytes and rat white adipocytes.
β-Adrenergic Receptor and Insulin Resistance in the Heart
TLDR
The hypothesis that βARs over-stimulation leads to induction of insulin resistance in the heart is examined.
Loss of HIF-1α impairs GLUT4 translocation and glucose uptake by the skeletal muscle cells.
TLDR
HIF-1α is a determinant for GLUT4-mediated glucose uptake in the skeletal muscle cells thus as a possible target to alleviate impaired glucose metabolism in, e.g., type 2 diabetes.

β3-Adrenergic Stimulation Differentially Inhibits Insulin Signaling and Decreases Insulin-induced Glucose Uptake in Brown Adipocytes*
TLDR
Findings indicate cross-talk between adrenergic and insulin signaling pathways isprotein kinase A-dependent and, at least in part, protein kinase C-dependent, and could play an important role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance associated with sympathetic overactivity and regulation of brown fat metabolism.
Effects of epinephrine on insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and GLUT-4 phosphorylation in muscle.
TLDR
It is concluded that beta-adrenergic stimulation decreases glucose uptake by raising glucose 6-phosphate concentration, thus inhibiting hexokinase, but does not inhibit insulin-stimulated glucose transport and phosphorylation of GLUT-4 has no effect on glucose transport in skeletal muscle.
The beta3-adrenergic agonist BRL37344 increases glucose transport into L6 myocytes through a mechanism different from that of insulin.
TLDR
The results suggest that BRL37344 enhances glucose transport into L6 myocytes through a signaling pathway different from that of insulin and that the mechanism does not involve the translocation of GLUT4, but may be due to an increase in the intrinsic activity ofGLUT present in the plasma membrane.
Atypical beta-adrenergic effects on insulin signaling and action in beta(3)-adrenoceptor-deficient brown adipocytes.
TLDR
Insulin receptor-independent, but PI 3-kinase-dependent, potent negative effects of the novel beta(1)-adrenoceptor state on diverse biological end points of insulin action are indicated.
Desensitization of beta-adrenergic receptors in adipocytes causes increased insulin sensitivity of glucose transport.
TLDR
125I-labeled insulin binding to adipocytes was not altered by the isoproterenol infusions, indicating that desensitization of beta-adrenergic receptors results in tighter coupling between insulin receptors and stimulation of glucose transport.

TLDR
Results of this study indicate that epinephrine is capable of inhibiting glucose transport activated by a moderate, but not a high, physiological insulin concentration.
Counter-regulation of insulin-stimulated glucose transport by catecholamines in the isolated rat adipose cell.
Catecholamine-induced insulin resistance of glucose transport in isolated rat adipocytes.
TLDR
Pre-incubation with catecholamines inhibited insulin stimulation of D-glucose transport in rat adipocytes mainly by a decrease in high-affinity binding of insulin, which was not mediated by low ATP levels.
