The isolation of preadipocyte cell strains from adipose tissue and from bone marrow, and the establishment of preadipocyte cell lines from embryonic and adult mouse, have been useful tools to study the process of adipose cell differentiation. This process is regulated both by extracellular signals present in serum and by intracellular signals; the characterization of these signals is under investigation.
