Adiponectin is an adipokine, which is expressed in adipose tissue and is thought to play an important role in glucose metabolism. Hypoadiponectinemia can cause reduction of fatty acid oxidation, decreased glucose uptake in skeletal muscle cells, and increased gluconeogenesis in hepatic cells.
