The purinergic nucleoside adenosine effectively prevented the death of dopaminergic neurons that occurs spontaneously and progressively in cultures of rat mesencephalon. Adenosine also significantly increased dopamine uptake, attesting to the state of differentiation and functional integrity of the neurons that were rescued.
