Adenosine has recently become widely available for the treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. In order to evaluate its role in the management of arrhythmias, we have reviewed the literature on the cellular mechanisms, metabolism, potential for adverse effects, and clinical experience of the efficacy and safety of intravenous adenosine.
