Previous Australian records of Ascothoracida are summarised. In the Synagogidae, three new species of Gorgonolaureus Utinomi are described from primnoid (Pterostenelia plumatilis (Rousseau», paramuriceid (unidentified), and gorgoniid (Eunicelia sp.) gorgonacean hosts off Western Australia, Vietnam, and New Caledonia, respectively. A new species of Sessilogoga Grygier, 1990 parasitic in an antipatharian from Green Island, Taiwan, with notes on its nauplius larvae and the synapomorphies and apparent gonochorism of the genus (Crustacea: Thecostraca: Ascothoracida)

The new species appears to be gonochoric with females generally larger than males; the find of a juvenile female smaller than any adult male tends to refute the likelihood of protandry.

This is the first study of a new form of Waginella to be based on the extensive use of both light and scanning electron microscopy to document the fine-scale external morphology.


Photographs of the corals, their enlarged corallites and internal cavities, and the parasites, as well as a morphological account of the successive stages of gall formation and illustrations of the parasites’ nauplius larvae, are presented.

Lattice organs on the dorsal part of the carapace were examined by scanning electron microscopy in females, males, and/or cypridiform ascothoracid-larva I stage, for the first time ever, and limits the potential utility of Ascothoracida as an out-group for polarizing lattice organ character-state variation in Cirripedia.

The Ascothoracida are ecto-, mesoor endoparasites in echinoderms and cnidarians, except for the secondarily hermaphroditic species of the Petrarcidae.
