Summary Spatial variation of ten meristic traits of Gasterosteus aculeatus (including lateral plate, vertebral, and fin ray and pterygiophore numbers) was examined using ca. 100 population samples representing the two major marine and freshwater morphs throughout their European distribution. The patterns and extent of variability were visualised with 3-dimensional portrayals of third-degree trend surfaces, and differ between traits and morphs.
