ADAPTIVE CONTROL has by now a fairly long history in both academic research and in industrial applications. Yet, it was long known as a field not entirely easy to grasp for a newcomer, whether he or she was a research student or a control engineer in industry. This may seem surprising, since the basic ideas behind the first adaptive controllers were fairly simple and intuitively appealing.
