Administration of hypertonic NaCl solutions by intraperitoneal injection evokes a transient expression of immediate-early genes in the hypothalamic magnocellular neurons of supraoptic nuclei (SON), which is followed by an upregulation of arginine vasopressin synthesis and a general increase in cellular metabolic activity.
