Summary Acute occlusion of the abdominal aorta is usually the result of either severe atherosclerosis followed by spontaneous thrombosis, blunt abdominal trauma, or aortic embolism. Four cases of acute infrarenal aortic occlusion are presented and the literature is reviewed to illustrate this rare but serious vascular catastrophe.
