AbstractThis study aimed at a systematic review and meta-analysis of all available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using acupuncture to treat tinnitus. Five electronic databases, in both English and Chinese, were searched. All studies in our review and meta-analysis included parallel RCTs of tinnitus patients which compared subjects receiving acupuncture (or its other forms, such as electroacupuncture) to subjects receiving no treatment, sham treatment, drugs or basic medical therapy. Data…
Acupuncture for tinnitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
TLDR
Acupuncture had no significant effect on the primary outcome of VAS score compared with control treatment; however, positive effects on secondary outcomes (THI and TSI score) were observed in acupuncture versus control groups.
Effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for treatment of tinnitus
TLDR
A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis is formed to evaluate whether acupuncture is effective and safe in curing tinnitus, and is helpful for subsequent evaluation.
Acupuncture as Complementary Treatment for Acute Tinnitus: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study
TLDR
The design of this pilot study was feasible in terms of recruitment, although patient adherence to treatment remained challenging, however, considering the small intergroup differences, procedures regarding the numbers of acupuncture sessions and the total period of the acupuncture treatment should be reconsidered.
The Effectiveness of Acupuncture for Osteoporosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
TLDR
To summarize the existing evidence and evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture as a clinical treatment for osteoporosis, six English and four Chinese databases were searched from their inception to April 2017 and meta-analysis showed that warm acupuncture could increase the bone mineral density of lumar and electroacupuncture could relieve pain.
Analysis of Factors Influencing the Efficiency of Acupuncture in Tinnitus Patients
TLDR
It was confirmed that the combination of periauricular and distal acupuncture and 17 to 24 acupuncture sessions contributed to a considerably better outcome, which would serve as a reference for clinical acupuncturists to select an appropriate acupuncture strategy in the treatment of tinnitus.
Acupuncture Points Stimulation for Meniere's Disease/Syndrome: A Promising Therapeutic Approach
TLDR
Compared with western medicine comprehensive treatment (WMCT), the APS alone or in combination with WMCT had a significant positive effect in controlling vertigo; however, the result was negative in hearing improvement and DHI.
Electroacupuncture for Tinnitus: A Systematic Review
TLDR
No convincing evidence that electroacupuncutre is beneficial for treating tinnitus could be found and there is an urgent need for more high-quality trials with large sample sizes for the investigation of electroacupuncture treatment forTinnitus.
Evaluation of Acupuncture’s Efficacy Within Otolaryngology
TLDR
Recommendations and guidelines supporting acupuncture as an alternative or adjunctive therapy are surfacing for certain conditions such as allergic rhinitis, however, stronger conclusions with specific recommendations are limited by varied methodology between majority of the studies.
Influence of Acupuncture on Autonomic Balance in Adult Tinnitus Patients: An Exploratory Study
TLDR
The preliminary study suggests three-week deep acupuncture can improve tinnitus symptoms in adult tinnitis patients, which may be related to the regulation of autonomic nervous system balance.

Acupuncture for the treatment of tinnitus: a systematic review of randomized clinical trials
TLDR
The number, size and quality of the RCTs on the effectiveness of acupuncture for the treatment of tinnitus are not sufficient for drawing definitive conclusions, and further rigorous R CTs that overcome the many limitations of the current evidence are warranted.
Efficacy of acupuncture as a treatment for tinnitus: a systematic review.
TLDR
Acupuncture has not been demonstrated to be efficacious as a treatment for tinnitus on the evidence of rigorous randomized controlled trials.
Acupuncture treatment of chronic unilateral tinnitus--a double-blind cross-over trial.
TLDR
There was no significant difference between traditional Chinese acupuncture and placebo (Wilcoxon test, P greater than 0.05, one-tailed); there was no relation between the patients' subjective statements and the results of sound balance measurements as an objective standard of tinnitus (Spearman test).
Acupuncture in the management of tinnitus: a placebo-controlled study.
TLDR
It is concluded that acupuncture has no specific alleviating effect on noise-induced tinnitus.
Effect of traditional Chinese acupuncture on severe tinnitus: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical investigation with open therapeutic control.
TLDR
No statistically significant differences were found between the acupuncture group and the placebo group.
A randomised, placebo-controlled trial of manual and electrical acupuncture for the treatment of tinnitus.
Long-term effect of acupuncture for treatment of tinnitus: a randomized, patient- and assessor-blind, sham-acupuncture-controlled, pilot trial.
TLDR
Through evaluation of subjective (THI and VAS) and objective outcomes (PTA and SD), this study demonstrates the long-term effect of real acupuncture.
Impact of acupuncture on otoacoustic emissions in patients with tinnitus.
Regression Analysis of the Effects of Tinnitus
TLDR
Intervention with both the acupuncture and drug treatments was effective for patients with tinnitus.
Idiopathic subjective tinnitus treated by biofeedback, acupuncture and drug therapy.
TLDR
Treatment by biofeedback caused a significant easing in the degree of discomfort caused by the tinnitus to patients during rest, indicating that the biofeed back method is more effective in comparison with acupuncture and Cinnarizine in the treatment of those suffering from tinnitis.
