Traditional Chinese acupuncture has a history of over 2,500 years. It is now considered to be a type of “complementary medicine” because it is effective in the treatment of many conditions with fewer side effects compared with other medical procedures, such as surgery or treatment with pharmaceuticals (Wu, 1996).
