The antiproliferative effect of julocrotine, an alkaloid isolated from Croton pullei var. glabrior (Euphorbiaceae), was studied in the macrophage amastigote and promastigote stages of the protozoan Leishmania (L.) amazonensis, which causes cutaneous leishmaniasis in the New World. Julocrotine showed a dose-dependent effect against the amastigote and promastigote forms, where 79 μM julocrotine inhibited promastigote growth by 54%, with an IC50 of 67 μM. To analyze the antiamastigote activity of…
Leishmanicidal Activity of (+)-Phyllanthidine and the Phytochemical Profile of Margaritaria nobilis (Phyllanthaceae)
TLDR
The low toxicity to macrophages and the effects against promastigote and amastigotes are suggestive that (+)-phyllanthidine could be a promising antileishmanial agent for treating cutaneous leishmaniasis.
Ethanolic extract of Croton blanchetianus Ball induces mitochondrial defects in Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes.
TLDR
The present results indicated that EECb had effective and selective effects against Leishmaniasis infantum and Leishmania amazonensis, and that these effects appeared to be mediated by mitochondrial dysfunction.
In vitro biological action of aqueous extract from roots of Physalis angulata against Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis
TLDR
It is demonstrated that AEPa effectively promotes antileishmanial activity with several important morphological alterations and has no cytotoxic effects on host cells.
Actividad antiparasitaria de extractos de plantas colombianas de la familia Euphorbiaceae
TLDR
The EO obtained from plants of the Euphorbiaceae family showed antiparasitic activity with some toxicity against mammalian cells.
Anti-malarial, anti-trypanosomal, and anti-leishmanial activities of jacaranone isolated from Pentacalia desiderabilis (Vell.) Cuatrec. (Asteraceae)
TLDR
Results suggested that jacaranone, as other similar secondary metabolites or synthetic analogs, might be useful tolls for drug design for in vivo studies against protozoan diseases.
A Novel Function for Kojic Acid, a Secondary Metabolite from Aspergillus Fungi, as Antileishmanial Agent
TLDR
Results demonstrated the great potential of KA as an anti-leishmanial compound and 4 weeks after KA-topical formulation treatment of infected animals, a healing process was observed with a high production of collagen fibers and a decrease in parasite burden.
Antileishmanial activity of cryptolepine analogues and apoptotic effects of 2,7-dibromocryptolepine against Leishmania donovani promastigotes
TLDR
Disruption of mitochondrial membrane integrity in terms of depolarization of membrane potential, and finally degradation of chromosomal DNA into oligonucleosomal fragments—the hallmark event of apoptosis—characterized the mode of cell death in L. donovani promastigotes.
The Dichloromethane Fraction of Croton sonorae, A Plant Used in Sonoran Traditional Medicine, Affect Entamoeba histolytica Erythrophagocytosis and Gene Expression
TLDR
Results showed that C. sonorae is a potential source of antiamoebic compounds and decreased the expression of genes involved in Entamoeba histolytica trophozoite pathogenesis, such as cysteine proteases, sod, pfor, and enolase.
Volatiles, A Glutarimide Alkaloid and Antimicrobial Effects of Croton pullei (Euphorbiaceae)
TLDR
Phytochemical investigation of the stem methanol extract led to the isolation of a new natural product from the glutarimide alkaloid group named N-[2,6-dioxo-1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-piperidinyl]-acetamide, confirming that C. pullei is a rich source of this class of alkaloids.

Antileishmanial activity of crude extract and coumarin from Calophyllum brasiliense leaves against Leishmania amazonensis
TLDR
Results showed that (−) mammea A/BB is a potent growth inhibitor of L. amazonensis and caused important changes in the parasite’s ultrastructure, which provided new perspectives on the development of novel drugs with leishmanicidal activity obtained from natural products.
Licochalcone A, a novel antiparasitic agent with potent activity against human pathogenic protozoan species of Leishmania
TLDR
It is demonstrated that licochalcone A in concentrations that are nontoxic to host cells exhibits a strong antileishmanial activity and that appropriate substituted chalcones might be a new class of antileishesmanial drugs.
Antileishmanial Activity of Parthenolide, a Sesquiterpene Lactone Isolated from Tanacetum parthenium
TLDR
The results provide new perspectives on the development of novel drugs with leishmanicidal activities obtained from natural products, including parthenolide, which is a sesquiterpene lactone purified from the hydroalcoholic extract of aerial parts of Tanacetum parthenium.
Antileishmanial Activity of a Linalool-Rich Essential Oil from Croton cajucara
TLDR
Results provide new perspectives on the development of drugs with activities against Leishmania, as linalool-rich essential oil is a strikingly potent leishmanicidal plant extract which inhibited the growth of L. amazonensis promastigotes at very low concentrations and presented no cytotoxic effects against mammalian cells.
Alterations Induced by the Antifungal Compounds Ketoconazole and Terbinafine in Leishmania
TLDR
The appearance of large multivesicular bodies, especially after ketoconazole treatment, increased amount of lipid inclusions as well as numerous, polymorphic volutin granules, particularly in terbinafine‐treated cells may indicate the existence of an unusual autophagic process in cells treated with ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitors.
Selective Effect of 2′,6′-Dihydroxy-4′-Methoxychalcone Isolated from Piper aduncum on Leishmania amazonensis
TLDR
Observations suggest that DMC is selectively toxic to the parasites, and its simple structure may well enable it to serve as a new lead compound for the synthesis of novel antileishmanial drugs.
Antileishmanial Activity of an Indole Alkaloid fromPeschiera australis
TLDR
TheLeishmanicidal effects of a chloroform fraction and a purified indole alkaloid obtained from crude stem extract of Peschiera australis against Leishmania amazonensis, a causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the New World are shown.
In Vitro Activities of ER-119884 and E5700, Two Potent Squalene Synthase Inhibitors, against Leishmania amazonensis: Antiproliferative, Biochemical, and Ultrastructural Effects
TLDR
The results show that ER-119884 and E5700 are unusually potent and selective inhibitors of the growth of Leishmania amazonensis, probably because of their inhibitory effects on de novo sterol biosynthesis at the level of SQS, but some of the observations indicate that the drugs may also interfere with other cellular processes.
