Bacterial plasmids, by definition, are not essential for host cell survival except in specialized environments where plasmid-borne genes, like those for antibiotic resistance or degradative metabolic pathways, confer a selective advantage. Although some plasmids are lost quite rapidly when appropriate selective pressure is removed, others are found to be retained over many generations in the absence of any selection.
