Mitogenic stimulation by growth factors may be mediated through intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) acting as signaling molecules. Incubation of multicellular prostate tumor spheroids with adenosine 5' triphosphate (ATP) dose-dependently stimulated tumor growth.
