While the acquisition of apoptosis resistance is part of the differentiation program of skeletal muscle cells, differentiated muscle cells can undergo apoptosis in response to physiological or pathological stimuli. The generation of reactive oxygen species by mitochondria plays a major role in the control of apoptosis in many cell types.
