Epidemiological data and in vivo animal experiments have indicated that exposure to the Ah-receptor (AhR) ligand dioxin and other dioxin-like compounds can lead to cardiovascular toxicity and atherosclerosis. Here, we investigated the effect of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), the most potent AhR ligand, on the differentiation of U937 cells into foam cells, which are considered to be early lesions of atherosclerosis.
