Snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) are structurally and functionally similar to matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). We have previously demonstrated that a SVMP, named gaminelysin, can induce endothelial cell apoptosis [Biochem J. 357 (2001) 719].
