The present strategy for the prevention of excessive sympathetic neural traffic to the heart relies on the use of beta-blockers, drugs that act at the heart end of the brain-heart axis. It is concluded that tachycardia induced by restraint stress is due to a sustained increase in cardiac sympathetic activity associated with a transient vagal withdrawal, and activation of central 5-HT(1A) receptors attenuates this tachycardsia by suppressing autonomic effects.
