Early embryonic death is among the most common causes of pregnancy termination; in cattle, most embryo losses occur during the first 2 weeks of gestation. The mechanisms mediating embryo survival and death are incompletely understood. One possible determinant of embryonic survival or failure is inappropriate signaling by maternally-derived cytokines.
