STUDY OBJECTIVE
Actigraphy, a method of inferring sleep from the presence or absence of wrist movement, has been well validated against polysomnography in trials with people without insomnia. However, the small amount of literature on validation with insomniacs has revealed an actigraphy bias toward overscoring sleep. The current validation trial with insomniacs used the largest number of subjects to date in such research and attracted participants with diverse demographic characteristics…

Validity of Actigraphy in Young Adults With Insomnia
- Medicine, PsychologyBehavioral sleep medicine
- 2018
Actigraphy was a valid objective measure of SOL, WASO, TST, and SE in a young adult insomnia sample, as compared to ambulatory PSG, and may be a valid alternative for assessing sleep in young adults with insomnia when more costly PSG measures are not feasible.
Comparison of actigraphy with polysomnography and sleep logs in depressed insomniacs
- PsychologyJournal of sleep research
- 2012
It is demonstrated that, while bias was limited between PSG and the other two measurement types, there were somewhat broad 95% limits of agreement for all sleep variables with both sleep diaries and actigraphy.
Relation between ambulatory actigraphy and laboratory polysomnography in insomnia practice and research
- Medicine, PsychologyJournal of sleep research
- 2019
Actigraphy in people with insomnia over seven nights is a valid indicator of sleep compared to an independent in‐laboratory PSG, and increases the validity of actigraphy, showing no difference in TIB, TST, SE and SOL.
Actigraphy in the assessment of insomnia: a quantitative approach.
- MedicineSleep
- 2009
The combination of TST, SOL, and NA > 5 proved the best way to assess insomnia using actigraphy, and a linear discriminant function (LDF) was developed to identify and combine the most useful actigraphic sleep parameters to separate insomnia patients from normal sleepers.

Discordant sleep parameters among actigraphy, polysomnography, and perceived sleep in patients with sleep-disordered breathing in comparison with patients with chronic insomnia disorder

ACT is useful to monitor sleep and sleep quality in patients with CID, and TST by ACT is reliable, however, ACT is insufficient to assess sleep quality due to its low agreement with PSG.
Exploring the use of actigraphy to investigate sleep problems in older people with intellectual disability.
- MedicineJournal of intellectual disability research : JIDR
- 2012
It is needed into the validity of objective sleep parameters, as measured with the Actiwatch, for screening and epidemiological research in older people with ID, whereas reference data on sleep parameters and cut-off values are to be obtained.
Wake detection capacity of actigraphy during sleep.
- PsychologySleep
- 2007
The very low ability of actigraphy to detect wakefulness casts doubt on its validity to measure sleep quality in clinical populations with fragmented sleep or in situations where the sleep-wake cycle is challenged, such as jet lag and shift work.
Using actigraphy versus polysomnography in the clinical assessment of chronic insomnia (retrospective analysis of 27 patients).

Wrist actigraphy.
- Psychology, MedicineChest
- 2011
Clinical guidelines and research suggest that wrist actigraphy is particularly useful in the documentation of sleep patterns prior to a multiple sleep latency test, in the evaluation of circadian rhythm sleep disorders, to evaluate treatment outcomes, and as an adjunct to home monitoring of sleep-disordered breathing.
