Acoustoelasticity, or the change in elastic wave speeds with stress, is a well-studied phenomenon for bulk waves. The effect of stress on Lamb waves is not as well understood, although it is clear that anisotropic stresses will produce anisotropy in the Lamb wave dispersion curves. Here the theory of acoustoelastic Lamb wave propagation is developed for isotropic media subjected to a biaxial, homogeneous stress field. It is shown that, as expected, dispersion curves change anisotropically for…

TLDR
High order Lamb waves are investigated for the effects of stress on both symmetrical and anti-symmetrical modes in an aluminum plate for wave propagation and load parallel and the S1 mode is found to be about six times more sensitive than bulk waves for the load-measurement axes parallel case.
Derivation of acoustoelastic Lamb wave dispersion curves in anisotropic plates at the initial and natural frames of reference
The propagation speed of ultrasonic waves in pre-stressed media can be evaluated either at the natural or initial frames of reference. In this paper general equations that can be applied to the
In situ estimation of applied biaxial loads with Lamb waves.
TLDR
A method is developed and verified via simulations to estimate an arbitrary biaxial load from phase velocity changes measured along multiple directions of propagation, and it is shown that opening fatigue cracks may significantly degrade results by interfering with Lamb wave direct arrivals, but that this degradation can be mitigated by using a reduced set of data from unaffected paths of propagation.
Finite element prediction of acoustoelastic effect associated with Lamb wave propagation in pre-stressed plates
The paper presents outcomes of a finite element (FE) study of acoustoelastic effect associated with Lamb wave propagation in plates subjected to homogeneous bi-axial and bending stresses. In
Ultrasonic waves in uniaxially stressed multilayered and one-dimensional phononic structures: Guided and Floquet wave analysis.
