In this paper, a novel gradient index (GRIN) acoustic metamaterial is proposed based on the concept of optical modified generalized Luneburg lens (MGLL). With the MGLL, double-foci and high energy density between the two foci can be achieved, which enables the realization of an ultra-long acoustic jet between the two foci. Compared to the generalized Luneburg lens with a single focus, which can only achieve short acoustic jet in the near field or ultra-long acoustic jet in the far field, the…

GRIN metamaterial generalized Luneburg lens for ultra-long acoustic jet
In this work, a 3D-printed mesoscale acoustic generalized Luneburg lens based on cylindrical metamaterial is proposed. Compared to isotropic lenses, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate a
Practical realization of a sub-λ/2 acoustic jet
TLDR
It is demonstrated that by choosing a suitable size cylindrical lens, and by selecting the speed-of-sound ratio between the lens material(s) and the surrounding medium, an acoustic jet is formed with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) less than λ/2.
Acoustic gradient-index lens using orifice-type metamaterial unit cells
A gradient-index (GRIN) lens made of acoustic metamaterial is described that is assembled of unit cells with specific orifice characteristics. The GRIN distribution of the lens is established using
Controlling sound with acoustic metamaterials
Acoustic metamaterials can manipulate and control sound waves in ways that are not possible in conventional materials. Metamaterials with zero, or even negative, refractive index for sound offer new
Compact Acoustic Rainbow Trapping in a Bioinspired Spiral Array of Graded Locally Resonant Metamaterials
TLDR
This work investigated the frequency selection properties of a space-saving design consisting of Helmholtz resonators arranged at sub-wavelength intervals along a cochlear-inspired spiral tube, which induced bandgap formation at different frequencies along the length of the spiral tube.
Ultrasound beam steering with flattened acoustic metamaterial Luneburg lens
We report ultrasound beam steering based on 2D and 3D flattened acoustic metamaterial Luneburg lenses at 40 kHz. The effective properties of the lenses are obtained by using the quasi-conformal
Structural Luneburg lens for broadband cloaking and wave guiding
TLDR
This paper develops a structural wave cloak and waveguide based on SLLs, which exhibit excellent performance for structural wave cloaking and waveguiding over a broadband operating frequency range.
Focusing Acoustic Beams with a Ball-Shaped Lens beyond the Diffraction Limit
The authors explore the concept of ``acoustic jets'' for the superfocusing of sound waves. Compared to conventional diffraction-limited systems, 50% better spatial resolution of ultrasound images can
Modified structural Luneburg lens for broadband focusing and collimation
Abstract Luneburg lens is a symmetric gradient-index lens with a refractive index that increases from the outer surface to the center in a radial manner. It has the ability to focus and collimate
The Double-Focus Generalized Luneburg Lens Design and Synthesis Using Metasurfaces
In this communication, we study the use of metasurfaces comprising circular metallic patches printed on a grounded dielectric substrate to design and synthesize the double-focus generalized Luneburg
