Abstract Deoxyribose, free or from DNA, is extremely labile in 1 M (6%) PCA (perchloric acid) when incubated at 90 °, but is relatively stable in 0.3 M (5%) TCA (trichloroacetic acid) over the period necessary for nucleic acid extraction from tissues (30 minutes). When the concentration of PCA is 2%, or approximately equimolar with 5% TCA, deoxyribose stability, DNA hydrolytic characteristics, and tissue extracting effectiveness at 90 ° are similar to results found with 5% TCA.
